SOCIALLY AWKWARD

The intersection of Ashland and Armitage, Chicago

Morning

A New Location

After all my talk about the ideal-ness of my original location, I have decided to try a new one. I am still on Ashland, but now I am four blocks south, which puts me on the other side of the river. Here I have more of a median to work with-- in the original location, the only median I had was the short and narrow strip that was part of the left turn lane. Now I have an island that is approximately 150 feet long and 8 feet wide. And at this location, I don't have the problem of taking a real panhandler's spot; I've never seen a real sign carrier using this spot. The red light is much shorter at this intersection. I will have to see what impact this has.

New Rules

I am dumping the "REX RADIATOR" hat for good. Today I wore a black skull cap because it was cold. But I will avoid wearing any clothing with labeling, allowing the sign to be the only label.

I will accept offers of money. My reluctance to do so was based on my own personal ethical problems, as well as a fear of being busted for actual panhandling. I realize now these inhibitions are only hindering the project.

My Return

There's mot much to report from today's work. I didn't stay out very long. I think the cold weather keeps car windows up, and allows an added barrier to what goes on in the street.
